A note for parents

Privacy notice

Hanzi Island (汉字小岛：趣味识字) is developed by Peng Lin for children aged 5–7 with a parent or guardian, offering simplified Chinese learning with Mandarin narration on iPad, and also on iPhone starting with version 1.2. Version 1.0 includes 1,500 characters, 150 units, and 750 two-character lessons. It is free to download with no in-app purchases or subscriptions. Version 1.1 integrates Google AdMob app-open and map-screen banner ads. Version 1.2 adds optional rewarded video ads chosen by a parent. Adults can send privacy questions to 540933120@qq.com.

Learning support and corrections

This app primarily supports Chinese character learning for young children and early primary learners. We recommend using it with a parent or guardian; it does not replace school teaching or professional educational assessment. If you notice an error in a character, pronunciation, word, example sentence, or other content, a parent or guardian is welcome to report it and suggest a correction at 540933120@qq.com. Please identify the content and lesson. The developer will review feedback and correct confirmed issues in future updates. No personal information about the child is needed.

1. Accounts and children's information

The app requires no registration or login and does not ask children for a name, birth date, photo, contact details, or other identifying information. It has no chat, public profiles, or local-network multiplayer. Learning records, support contact, external links, advanced settings, and progress resets are behind an adult check.

2. Records on the device

The app uses on-device IndexedDB to save lesson progress, practice and hint-use records, and sound and motion settings to resume learning, show practice performance, and restore preferences. The full course and story experience store their progress separately. Course resources are bundled with the app for offline learning. The app has no developer-operated backend, account service, cloud sync, or separate learning-analytics SDK, and does not upload learning records to the developer.

The iPhone app, iPad app, and browser version store data in their own environments without automatic synchronization. System backups may include or restore local data depending on device and backup settings. The app does not provide a cross-device restore or sync service.

Version 1.2 stores whether the starlight decoration is unlocked and enabled in on-device UserDefaults, to restore it on the next launch. This state is not uploaded to the developer. Resetting lessons does not clear it; deleting the app generally does, although system backup restoration may restore it.

3. Advertising, tracking, and permissions

The iOS app integrates Google Mobile Ads SDK starting with version 1.1 for app-open and map-screen banner ads. Version 1.2 adds an optional rewarded video in the parent area. An adult must complete the parent check and choose to watch; completing the ad earns one local starlight decoration. This does not unlock or restrict lessons. Declining, closing the ad early, ad failure, or no network does not prevent learning. Before initialization, it applies child age treatment and a G content rating limit, disables personalized ads and publisher first-party ID, and does not request ATT authorization. The app does not explicitly read or pass IDFA, learning records, names, or contact details to advertising services. No Firebase or mediation SDKs are integrated. These settings do not mean that the advertising service processes no data.

Ad requests require a network connection. Google discloses that its SDK may process IP addresses (which can indicate approximate location), diagnostics, performance information, ad impressions and interactions, and device/app identifiers permitted by its configuration, for advertising, measurement, fraud prevention, and service improvement. This advertising-service processing is separate from learning records stored only on the device.

Google processes advertising-service data under its own policies, potentially using its global infrastructure. We do not specify a single storage location or retention period for Google. See Google SDK data disclosure, Google Privacy Policy, and Google partner-site data practices. The app does not request camera, microphone, location, contacts, or local-network access and has no in-app purchases, subscriptions, or forms collecting children’s contact details.

4. Device narration and platform services

Mandarin narration uses AVSpeechSynthesizer with an installed Apple Simplified Chinese (zh-CN) voice. The app does not record audio, upload narration text to the developer or a speech server, or bundle system-speech recordings exported from macOS. If the device voice is unavailable, a parent can check the system speech voice settings or use text hints to continue. The operating system handles downloading and managing system voices from Apple.

Apple may process download, device diagnostic, crash, or other platform data under its policies and your device settings, and may make permitted reports available to the developer. This is separate from the game actively uploading learning records. This notice does not mean that Apple or the operating system processes no data. 5. Support email

When a parent chooses to email support, the developer receives the sender's email address, message, and any voluntarily provided attachments to respond, investigate issues, and handle privacy requests. Please do not send a child's name, photo, school, home address, account passwords, or other unnecessary sensitive information.

Messages pass through your email provider and our support email provider, QQ Mail, under their respective policies. We retain support information only as needed to handle the request and necessary follow-up, unless retention is required by law. You can use the same address to request access to, correction of, or deletion of information sent directly to support. Email providers may have separate backup and retention rules.

6. Managing and deleting records

Parents can reset records in the parent area for the relevant learning experience, with a second confirmation before deletion. A full-course reset deletes only full-course progress. Story resets delete the corresponding story records as described on the confirmation screen and preserve other learning progress. A reset cannot be undone. There is no developer-operated backend, so the developer cannot retrieve or remotely delete your local learning records.

“Delete App” generally removes local app data. “Offload App” keeps documents and data and is different from deletion. Clearing browser site data may erase browser progress. System backups may retain older copies or restore records when a device is restored, so also review your backup settings.

If you believe a child has sent unnecessary personal information to support, a parent or guardian should contact the address above so we can help with a deletion request.

7. This website and external links

External support links in the app are behind an adult check and require a network connection. This site is hosted on GitHub Pages. Visiting a page sends the host a request that includes network information such as your IP address and browser information. GitHub may process requests and logs under its Privacy Statement. We cannot promise that the hosting provider keeps no logs.

We have added no advertising, analytics or tracking scripts, external fonts, embedded media, or contact forms to this site. The site does not actively read the game's local learning records. Visiting the website, opening external policy links, or sending email requires a network connection. External services handle data under their own policies.
